Varithena

Varithena is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that utilizes a polidocanol injectable foam. It’s designed to close off varicose veins by using the foam to treat the vein wall, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins. Varithena is FDA-approved and is typically delivered in one or two needle sticks, with little to no downtime.

Varithena is a prescription medication used to treat varicose veins. It is a minimally invasive, FDA-approved treatment that uses a specially formulated foam to treat varicose veins. 

1. What it is:

  • Foam Sclerotherapy: Varithena is a type of foam sclerotherapy where a microfoam containing the active ingredient polidocanol is injected into the affected vein. 
  • How it works: The foam expands within the vein, displacing the blood and causing the vein walls to collapse. Over time, the body reabsorbs the treated vein, and blood flow is redirected to healthier veins. 
  • Approved uses: It’s indicated for the treatment of incompetent great saphenous veins (GSV), accessory saphenous veins, and visible varicosities of the GSV system above and below the knee. 

2. How it’s administered:

  • Injection: Varithena is injected directly into the target vein using ultrasound guidance. 
  • Procedure: The procedure is performed in our office and takes about 30 minutes. 
  • Multiple sessions: While many patients achieve their desired results with a single treatment, some may require multiple sessions. 

3. Benefits:

  • Minimally invasive: It’s an alternative to more invasive surgical procedures, such as vein stripping. 
  • No anesthesia: General anesthesia is not required.

  • Common side effects: These may include leg pain or discomfort, injection site bruising or pain, and swelling. 
  • More serious side effects: Although less common, potential risks include blood clots in the leg veins, allergic reactions, and superficial thrombophlebitis (inflammation of a superficial vein).

5. Recovery:

  • Immediate recovery: Patients can usually return to light activities on the same day. 
  • Avoid strenuous activity: Heavy exercise should be avoided for at least one week. 
  • Compression stockings: Compression stockings may be recommended for several weeks after the procedure. 
  • Follow-up: It’s essential to follow your doctor’s post-procedure instructions and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.
